Ty Unnos with Common Ground and National Botanic Garden Wales
Common Ground is a grassroots organization who have been at the forefront of community conservation and environmental education in England for the last thirty years. I was commissioned in 2017 to respond to the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest, celebrating the relationship between trees, woods and people. For this I responded to the tradition of ty unnos (one-night house) in Wales which dates back several hundred years and suggests that if you were able to build a house on common land, with a fire smoking out from the chimney, the land was then rightfully yours. At the National Botanic Garden of Wales I worked with a community of people to build a structure in one day – from sunrise to sunset. The building is now used for Forest School Sessions and as part of their learning programme at the garden.
